Terengganu’s off-coast islands are undoubtedly some of the best in the country. 160km south of Kota Bahru, state capital Kuala Terengganu is an easygoing oil-and-gas rich city deeply entrenched in traditional Malay culture. There’s so much to see and do here – off-the-beaten-track attractions abound but it’s the stereotypical sights that are so alluring. Though you’ll see high-rise office blocks and banks jostling for position in the busy city centre, you’re also more than likely to see local kids spinning tops and flying kites. For first-time visitors there’s plenty of immediate appeal from Chinatown to the Tengku Tengah Zaharah Mosque (the Floating Mosque). Accommodation options are varied and you’re likely to find a collection of inexpensive, mid-range deals but it’s the luxury ventures that will blow your mind. Noteworthy is the Tanjong Jara Resort, an upscale establishment that rivals some of the best in the country.
