Home to a variety of ethnic groups and religions, you would be really unlucky if your trip to Malaysia does not coincide with some sort of religious or secular festival. Most of the religious celebrations here are exuberant, family-oriented affairs (Hari Raya, Chinese New Year, Deepavali, Christmas etc.) but you will also come across some pretty sombre ones i.e. Thaipusam. The best places for large-scale productions of these events are the bigger cities – Kuala Lumpur is undoubtedly the best. Since the timing of most of these festivals is an art than a science (dates are determined according to lunar calendars), if you are keen on seeing them in full swing, check out the dates given in each page of the listed festivals below before you book your trip.
