The Island
Lying 55 km southwest of Kota Kinabalu and 65 km northeast of Labuan, Pulau Tiga is an island located between these main entry points into Sabah. The island emerged due to volcanic disturbance on September 21, 1897, and is a fusion of three islands into one.
Being a nature paradise unto itself and ecological treasure, the whole island and much of the encircling reefs are designated as a state park under the care of Sabah Parks.
The island's tropical rainforests supports a variety of flora and an unusual assortment of wildlife, surrounded by a myriad of coral reefs and a vast diversity of marine life. The main unique features are the mud volcano, snakes on Snake Island (part of the island trio), crab eating macaque monkeys, monitor lizards, and notable birds like the eagle, hornbill and the illusive megapode. |
