What to See in Kelantan
Kota BahruThe capital of Kelantan is the centre of Malay culture in Malaysia. The small city bustles with life during the mornings and becomes quiet as the sun sets. Cultural CentreLocated on Jalan Mahmud in Kota Bahru, the Cultural centre is a living showcase of Kelantan’s cultural heritage. Demonstrations of popular folk arts and hobbies are held daily in the centre, such as ‘Wayang Kulit’ (shadow puppetry), ‘Silat’ (Malay martial arts) and ‘Rebana’ (Malay drums). The centre is only open from March to October each year. Handicraft Village and Craft MuseumBoth located in Kota Bahru, the Craft Museum houses many fine examples of Kelantanese craftsmanship in the form of wooden and silver articles. The Handicraft Village, on the other hand, demonstrates how items such as Batik, ‘Songket’ (prayer hat) and other embroidery are made. These products also go on sale here. Istana JaharThe palace in Kota Bahru was built in 1887 by a Sultan for his grandson, Long Kundur. It has been transformed into a museum showcasing Kelantan’s culture. Some of the things on display include photographs, artifacts and other exhibits. The palace itself is finely carved out of wood with complex patterns; truly a sight to admire. Kuala Krai Museum and Mini ZooThe Kuala Krai Museum and Mini Zoo in Kuala Krai, 64 km away from Kota Bahru, has a showcase of animals from deers to monkeys and bears to birds. The museum, on the other hand, is dedicated to non-living showcases, meaning preserved animals and other photographs and documents leading to the formation of Kuala Krai. Gunung StongKelantan’s highest mountain stands at 1,142 meters high. Visitors should not just climb the mountain but also visit ‘Gua Ikan’, which means ‘Fish Cave’, inspired from a rock formation resembling a fish. Legend has it that the Japanese stashed a horde of gold inside which has never been found. Visitors can also swim in the nearby Jelawang waterfalls. Kuala KohKuala Koh is one the entrance points to Taman Negara Pahang and is a two-hour drive away from Gua Musang. The Park has chalets available to accommodate visitors who wish to spend a longer time appreciating the beauty of Kuala Koh from colourful birds to scenic jungle trails. |
