Terengganu embodies the beauty of the sea, sun and winds. Its truly
long coastline of miles upon miles of white, sandy beaches and crystal
clear water stretches for 225 kilometres, extending from northern
Besut to southern Kemaman. This stretch of sun in the east is famous
for its beach-combing, sea sports, fishing and boat-making.
And that's not all, as its many islands are the country's most
picturesque and fascinating, not to mention, perfect getaways for
sun, sea, underwater adventure and relaxation.
Some islands have been gazetted as the marine parks of Redang,
Kapas, Perhentian and Tenggol. Pulau Redang, has exceptional dive
sites where massive coral reefs abound with an amazing variety of
aquatic life.
It
is quite amusing, but nevertheless true that tourists visit the
lovely beaches at Rantau Abang just because the turtles do! And
every year between May and September, both tourists and turtles
still flock to Rantau Abang, south of the capital city. Observe
Giant Leatherback turtles clamber ashore to lay their eggs. Some
turtles are as heavy as 375kg and as long as 2.5 metres!
It is indeed a rare treat to watch these peaceful creatures laboriously
digging holes in sand as nests, and then covering the holes again
before heading back to sea. Rantau Abang is one of six places in
the world where the Giant Leatherbacks trust to leave their eggs.
The
gently sloping sands and shallow, sparkling waters of Penarik adds
to its air of tranquillity and beauty, making it the place for sunbathers
and water seekers out for peace and quiet in uninterrupted bliss.
